The story

After his handler is killed, police dog Rex teams up with recently-divorced inspector Richard Moser to investigate crimes and solve mysteries on the streets of Vienna. And they sometimes get help from their two-legged friend, Inspector Stockinger.

What it’s like

Warm daylight and tidy Viennese streets, with the city's old facades and cafés framed in clean, unfussy compositions, give this crime series an easy, sunlit feel. Its vibe is gentle procedural comfort: a steady case-of-the-week rhythm, light investigative tension, and a dog-and-detective partnership that plays more on loyalty and affection than on dread. Scenes move briskly between interviews, chases through courtyards and quiet moments with the dog at heel, with score that stays unobtrusive and rarely pushes into suspense. Violence is present as the stuff of police work (shootings, assaults, the occasional body), but it is brief and seldom graphic, and the bloodshed stays off-screen or underplayed. Emotional stakes centre on a grieving, newly divorced inspector slowly finding steadiness through working alongside an animal who trusts him. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, background viewing while cooking, or a comfort watch for anyone who wants mysteries with a warm, uncomplicated heart. Dog lovers and fans of classic episodic detective shows will find it especially easy to settle into.
