The story

In 1962, amid a spate of unexplained disappearances of local children, a group of misfit friends begin to suspect a long-buried ancient evil lurking. As the kids set out to determine what's really going on, a rising unease prompts several townspeople to work together to restore peace – all while a U.S. military operation seeks to exploit Derry for its own objectives.

What it’s like

Muted, sun-faded 1960s Maine rendered in dusty ochre, washed-out greens and cold blue shadows, with the town's Depression-era decay visible in peeling clapboard, dim diners and rain-slick streets after dark. The camera tends toward patient, composed frames that let unease build in the margins: a figure standing too still at the edge of a lot, a basement door left ajar. Scares arrive in sudden bursts against a hum of low strings, distant radio static and long stretches of near silence, so the dread lingers longer than the jolts. This is dark, grounded and frequently disturbing. Violence is present and some scenes involve dead children and graphic menace, though the emphasis falls on dread and paranoia more than gore. Its mood is uneasy, cynical and slow to release, with the feel of a small town's buried secrets surfacing. It suits a late-night watch with the lights off, or a committed weekend binge for viewers who like mystery, period atmosphere and horror that is more unsettling than gentle. It is not a fit for anyone seeking something soothing.
