The story
John Wick is forced out of retirement by a former associate looking to seize control of a shadowy international assassins’ guild. Bound by a blood oath to aid him, Wick travels to Rome and does battle against some of the world’s most dangerous killers.
What it’s like
Saturated neon blues and wet-asphalt reflections give way to sleek, hard-edged interiors in this sequel, its camera gliding through long, unbroken takes that let choreographed gunfights and martial-arts brawls play out in full view. Rome arrives in warm amber evening light, all ochre facades, cobbled alleys and gleaming marble, while the Continental's art-deco corridors glow in moody, saturated color. The score is a pulsing electronic throb that drops out for the sharp report of gunfire and the thud of fists on flesh. The vibe is stylish, cold and relentlessly kinetic, the kind of ride that suits a late-night watch with the lights low, or a loud Friday when you want to be fully absorbed. Violence is frequent, stylized and often bloody, with close-quarters gunplay, knife work and brutal hand-to-hand fights, though it rarely lingers on gore for its own sake. Expect some strong language and a few tense, menacing scenes. Fans of precise, balletic action, moody urban spectacle and lean, revenge-driven pacing will find a lot to savour.
