The story

In September 2006, Square Enix announced Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, featuring new scenes and gameplay elements. Like the first re-release, this version would combine English audio with Japanese text and also use the "Sanctuary" theme song instead of "Passion". New cutscenes, however, used Japanese voice acting, as they mostly featured Organization XIII members from Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories who did not yet have English voice actors; these scenes were later re-dubbed into English for the HD 2.5 Remix release.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated Disney-animated worlds give this game its look: sunlit town squares, lush storybook forests, and glowing, sugary palettes under big cartoon skies, all rendered with a warm, painterly softness. Nights and shadowy interiors turn moody, with the inky black Heartless swarming in bursts of light. The score is orchestral and sweeping, with choral swells and the lilting, hopeful theme that carries the mood. Combat is fast, flashy, and rhythmic, with chunky hits, combos and the satisfying pop of enemies dissolving into light, and the pacing shifts between lively exploration, goofy banter from Donald and Goofy, and quieter, wistful story beats. Its emotional register is earnest and upbeat, with a friendship-and-memory thread about a boy and his companions that tilts toward melancholy near the end. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, with no gore, though some sequences carry brief peril and sadness. Vibe: sunny, nostalgic, a little bittersweet. Suits a weekend afternoon, a comfort replay, or a long stretch of play. For fans of Disney worlds, action-RPG combat, and gentle, colorful adventure with a heart.
