The story
Inspired by the adventures of Arsène Lupin, gentleman thief Assane Diop sets out to avenge his father for an injustice inflicted by a wealthy family.
What it’s like
Sun-bleached Paris in warm golden hour light, with glossy, high-contrast digital photography that shifts to cool blue-grey in the banlieue and the wealthy Hôtel particulier interiors. Framing is polished and kinetic, with frequent tracking shots through crowded streets, reflections in glass and rain-slicked pavement, and a playful use of disguise and misdirection that rewards close watching. The score mixes jaunty, percussive jazz-funk with tense synth pulses during stakeouts and heists, and the soundscape is full of city noise, phone-screen chimes and the rustle of costume changes. Vibe: stylish, cheeky suspense with a wry, sunny undertone. The pace is brisk and episodic, with each chapter built around a clever scheme, and the emotional core is a lonely, principled man slowly reconnecting with his son and rebuilding his sense of self. Violence is present but limited, mostly brief scuffles, threats and a few shootings, with little gore; the drama carries some grief and betrayal. Suited to viewers who want a caper with heart, a comfort-binge for a weekend night, and fans of elegant crime stories with a bit of humour.
