The story
The daughter of a former Hooter's waitress and an ex-pro wrestler, Margo is a recent college dropout and aspiring writer. Faced with a new baby, mounting pile of bills, and dwindling number of ways to pay them, Margo must find a way forward.
What it’s like
Wry and warm, with an amused register that finds comedy in cramped apartments, overdue bills, and a baby arriving before anything is settled. The look is grounded and domestic, lived-in rooms where mail piles up and money worry hangs over every scene. The pleasure is in the voice: a sharp, self-deprecating heroine who is clever, unpolished and stubbornly hopeful, surrounded by a family whose blunt humour and bruised charm give the household its noise. Elle Fanning carries the lead with exasperation and tenderness, while Nick Offerman and Greg Kinnear add dry, lived-in comic weight. Pacing is brisk and conversational, with episodes built on small reversals and running jokes rather than big set pieces. Intensity is low: financial strain and family friction are present, with no graphic violence or gore, and sexual content is minimal. It suits a rainy weekend, a lighter evening after a long week, or a comfortable binge when you want a witty, humane story about a young mother trying to write her way out of a mess. It is for viewers who enjoy character-driven comedy with real stakes and an affectionate, unsentimental heart.
