The story

An evil witch has replaced Princess Peach's fair speech with explosives! Mario and Luigi must once again come to her rescue, but this time they employ the help of Bowser, their sworn enemy. Mario and Luigi must learn new moves and combine powers to fight off enemies and move closer to the witch's castle. Guide this unlikely bunch through an abundance of minigames such as Border Jump and Mystery Carts. Combine the powers of Mario and Luigi to pull off special tag-team moves. Immerse yourself in this bright, cartoonish, and humorous world, complete with hit music featured in previous Mario games.

What it’s like

Bright, cartoonish Mushroom Kingdom colour everywhere: sun-saturated meadows, pastel towns, storybook castles drawn with thick outlines and bouncy, squash-and-stretch animation that makes every hop and hammer swing feel physical. The sprite art is hand-crafted and warm, and the handheld screen gives the whole world a compact, glowing intimacy, like a picture book you carry in your pocket. Sound leans on chirpy, familiar Mario melodies rearranged with a light, jazzy bounce, and the battle stingers and comic sound effects land with a playful snap. Turn-based combat moves at a relaxed, unhurried clip, punctuated by timed button presses and quick minigames that keep your hands busy without raising the pulse much. The mood is cheerful, self-deprecating and easygoing, with a running current of goofy humour between the two brothers and their unlikely allies. Its tenderness comes from friendship and rivalry rather than stakes; the brothers gradually learn to work as a team and to trust each other. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, with defeated foes simply vanishing in puffs of smoke and a few spooky ghosts and undead for flavour, though nothing frightening. Ideal for cosy evenings, long journeys, and anyone wanting a gentle, funny, low-stress role-playing adventure.
