The story
Paper Mario, a turn-based JRPG entry in the Mario franchise with a paper-based aesthetic and platforming elements, sees the titular character working his way through the Mushroom Kingdom's diverse locales and biomes, meeting its inhabitants, fighthing unruly enemies and recruiting an array of companions in order to once again save Princess Peach from the clutches of the evil Koopa King Bowser.
What it’s like
Flat, folded-paper characters sit against richly layered backdrops in bright storybook colours, with the world rendered as cut-out cardboard, crayon-smudged hills and textured parchment that feels handmade and warm. Sound is a bouncy, chiming Nintendo score full of pan-pipe and music-box charm, with clattering item-box sounds and cheerful jingles that make it easy to keep a gentle, unhurried pace. The mood is playful and cozy with a sly, self-aware streak, the kind of game you sink into on a rainy afternoon or during an easygoing evening with a controller in your lap. Combat is turn-based and rhythmic, timed button presses turning attacks into small satisfying beats, and the pacing stays brisk, with frequent dialogue, quirky side characters and light puzzles between battles. Intensity stays low: cartoonish bonks and stomps, enemies that poof away rather than bleed, and only mild peril, with the occasional spooky ghost or undead creature played for laughs. It suits players who want a charming, low-stakes adventure full of whimsy, wordplay and gentle surprises, especially those who enjoy quirky companions and a leisurely journey through colourful, handmade-looking lands.
