The story

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a turn-based role-playing game and the second entry in the Paper Mario series, set in a world styled to look like paper. Players guide Mario through themed locations, solving puzzles and battling enemies in a timing-based combat system where well-timed button presses strengthen attacks and defense. Battles play out on a stage before an audience whose reactions can help or hinder the player, and Mario recruits a party of companions with unique skills while equipping badges that grant new abilities. Brief segments also let the player control Princess Peach and Bowser between chapters.

What it’s like

Soft paper-cut worlds in warm, storybook colour: crisp folded edges, pastel towns, and ink-outlined characters that bend and flatten like cardboard stage props under gentle, even lighting. The score is bright and bouncy, full of plucked strings, brass fanfares and music-box lullabies that shift into quiet, slightly eerie tones in the haunted and ruined areas. Movement feels deliberate and unhurried, with a satisfying thump of timed button presses in turn-based battles that play out before a cheering, heckling audience on a theatre stage. The vibe is whimsical, wry and cozy, with a current of gentle mystery running underneath. Good for a lazy weekend afternoon, a long stretch of couch play, or a comfort replay. Its tone is light and funny, with a steady, low-stakes pace and plenty of puzzle-solving and detours. Violence is cartoonish: enemies are defeated by jumping and hammering, with no gore, and the occasional ghostly or undead scare stays mild. Designed for players who want charming, humorous, story-driven adventure with clever puzzles and gentle challenge.
