The story
A remake of the second game in the Paper Mario series, originally released for the Nintendo GameCube. Turn the page and join Mario and friends in an RPG adventure to discover the legendary treasure behind the ancient Thousand-Year Door. Will Mario complete his papery quest, or will he crumple under the pressure?
What it’s like
Bright, papercraft storybook colour with flat, layered backdrops that fold and tilt as the camera drifts across them, and a soft glow over every town square and ruined hallway. The music is cheerful and bouncy, full of bright brass, plucked strings and little chiptune-flavoured flourishes that loop comfortably through long walks between towns. Turn-based battles play out with snappy, exaggerated animations, and the action-command timing gives each fight a light, tactile rhythm rather than real tension. Exploration is unhurried: wandering through colourful villages, chatting with odd, endearing characters, and solving gentle puzzles in quaint stone corridors. The overall vibe is whimsical and warm, with a dash of playful mischief and occasional gentle comedy. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, with enemies puffing away or flipping over, and there is no gore, sexual content or real menace. It suits a relaxed evening, a cosy weekend, or a long stretch of low-stakes play, and fits players who want a charming, humorous adventure with heart and no harshness.
