The story

A 2D platformer and first entry on the SNES in the Super Mario franchise, Super Mario World follows Mario as he attempts to defeat Bowser's underlings and rescue Princess Peach from his clutches. The game features a save system, a less linear world map, an expanded movement arsenal and numerous new items for Mario, alongside new approaches to level design and art direction.

What it’s like

Bright, cartoonish sprites on a saturated palette of sky blues, lush greens and sunset oranges, with the pastel fantasy of Dinosaur Land rendered in crisp, flat pixel art. The world map is a sunlit patchwork of hills, forests and pipes that invites wandering, and each stage has its own mood: sunny meadows, shadowy cave interiors, cool underwater blue, ghostly haunted halls lit by lamplight. The soundtrack is bouncy, melodic chiptune, cheerful and springy, with the familiar hop-and-chime rhythm of jumps and coins threaded through every level. Pacing is brisk but forgiving, built on short bursts of play that suit a lazy Saturday afternoon, a familiar comfort replay, or a quiet hour with the handheld. Its tone is warm, playful and low-stakes, with an easy sense of discovery as secret exits and hidden paths reward curiosity. The intensity is mild: enemies are cartoonishly defeated by stomping or fireballs, with no blood, gore or frightening imagery, and the only real pressure is the occasional tight jump. It suits gentle, nostalgic players, families, and anyone wanting a cheerful, colourful adventure that feels relaxing rather than tense.
