The story

Super Mario All-Stars is a compilation of remasters for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It enhances Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels with an added on-cartridge save feature, updated graphics and sound, and an additional "battle game" for Super Mario Bros. 3. It is also the first time that the original Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 was released for the western public. Revisit the magic and fun of the classic Super Mario Bros. series on your Super NES! All the great Super Mario Bros. games for the NES have been powered up with 16-bit graphics and sound and collected on one super game pak. As an added bonus, the previously unreleased "Lost Levels" are included. These super challenging courses have never been available in this country until now!

What it’s like

Bright, saturated 16-bit pixel art with the sunny blue skies, green hills and stacked brick castles of the Mushroom Kingdom, and a sprite style that stays faithful to the NES originals while adding smoother shading and crisper detail. Sound is the familiar chiptune bounce, here re-recorded with fuller, warmer instruments, so the coin chimes and jump boings feel brighter rather than harsh. Each of the four games keeps its own visual identity: the classic side-scrolling stages, the dreamlike Subcon of Super Mario Bros. 2 with its bulbous vegetables and cheerful masks, and the richly layered, map-driven world of Super Mario Bros. 3 with its theatrical curtains and flying power-ups. Pacing is bouncy and quick-restart, with short levels that reward tight timing, and the Lost Levels bring a noticeably harder, more punishing rhythm. The vibe is playful, nostalgic, and cheerfully energetic, well suited to an evening of pick-up-and-play sessions, a retro weekend, or a comfortable break between longer games. Violence is entirely cartoonish: enemies are stomped or fireballed and vanish in puffs, with no blood, gore, or fear beyond occasional lost lives. It suits players who want a gentle, low-stakes challenge, families playing together, and anyone who enjoys precise platforming with a warm, old-school charm.
