The story

Mega Man X2, known as Rockman X2 in Japan is the second game in the Mega Man X series and was released for the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo in 1994. The game featured the same graphics as the first game, but was enhanced thanks to the use of the "Cx4" graphics chip (installed in the cartridge). The chip allowed for "semi-transparencies" and 3D effects.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated sprite art in the early-nineties Super Nintendo style: crisp outlines, glowing energy blasts, and sci-fi factories and city zones washed in neon blues, oranges and steel greys. The Cx4 chip gives the game a few semi-transparent effects and pseudo-3D flourishes, so explosions bloom and boss bodies shift and transform against layered parallax backdrops. The soundtrack is driving synth-rock, pulsing with a sharp, percussive edge that rises during boss encounters and sinks into tense, mechanical ambience between them. Side-scrolling movement is quick and precise: wall jumps, dashes and charged shots demand focus, so play is a steady rhythm of run, shoot and reposition rather than slow exploration. Violence is constant but stylised, robots bursting into sparks and debris, with no gore and no blood. Its mood is energetic and slightly wistful, a late-night arcade-feeling session with a little tension in every corridor. It suits an evening of focused play, a challenge-seeking afternoon, or a nostalgic return to 16-bit action, and it is made for players who like demanding, reflex-driven platforming with a clear sense of progress.
