The story

Mega Man X4, known as Rockman X4 in Japan, is the fourth game from the Mega Man X series. It was the second game in the series to be released on the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation (although it is the first original game; Mega Man X3 was ported to the systems), released in 1997 (and also re-released onto PlayStation as part of its greatest hits in 2002). It was later ported to the PC in 1998 and then re-released as part of the Mega Man X Collection

What it’s like

Bright, saturated anime-style sprites set against tightly drawn futuristic stages: rust-red factories, icy blue tundra, sleek metallic interiors lit by glowing circuitry and sudden explosions of orange fire. The side-scrolling camera stays locked to a fast, responsive protagonist, and the hand-drawn character art gives it a crisp, comic-book finish. Its soundtrack is driven by bouncing synth-rock guitar and pulsing electronic beats that rise to a frantic pitch during boss fights. The vibe is energetic and kinetic, with a nostalgic 1990s arcade snap that suits an evening session, a retro weekend, or a rainy afternoon of challenge. Pacing is quick and punchy: short stages, tough bosses that demand memorised patterns, and a steady rhythm of dash, jump and wall-slide. Emotionally it is light, with a sense of loyal camaraderie between its robot heroes and a playful tone under the danger. Violence is cartoonish and frequent: robots are shot and blown apart in bursts of sparks and small explosions, with some dark sci-fi undertones but no gore. It is best for players who enjoy precise, skill-based platforming and old-school bosses, and for fans of anime-flavoured action who want a challenge without grim realism.
