The story

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is the sequel to the espionage action game Metal Gear Solid. Much of the gameplay remains the same, as the game's protagonist has to sneak past guards, outsmart them using various gadgets and defeat the tricky boss enemies. The game expanded its predecessor's cover mechanic, with Solid Snake or Raiden able to take cover behind walls or objects and pop out to shoot at enemies, while the improved enemy AI allowed enemies to also take cover from the player. Metal Gear Solid 2 is considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time, as well as a leading example of artistic expression in video games.

What it’s like

Rain-slicked grey steel and dim, humid industrial interiors, with a cold blue-green cast in the tanker corridors and sudden white flashes of searchlight and muzzle fire. Its cutscenes are long, restless and cinematic, with fast cuts, dramatic low and high angles, and a score that swells into sharp strings and synth pulses at moments of exposure. Between set pieces, the codec calls bring a quieter, talky register of crackling radio voices and static. The vibe is cerebral paranoia: a tense, self-aware, sometimes tongue-in-cheek unease that suits a late night alone, a long wet weekend, or a replay for anyone who loves thinking through a stealth approach. Pacing alternates between slow, careful creeping and bursts of frantic cover-based firefights, and the emotional tone turns heavily on identity, information and loyalty. Violence is frequent and sharp, with gunfire, close-quarters kills and some blood, but it rarely lingers on gore; there are brief bleak deaths and some mature language and suggestive material, and regional releases differ in how much blood they show. This is for players who want a stealth game that questions itself as much as it challenges their hands.
