The story

The second entry in the Silent Hill franchise, Silent Hill 2 is a narrative-focused third-person psychological survival horror game with emphasis on combat, exploration and puzzle-solving elements which follows James Sunderland, a man who receives a letter, seemingly sent by his three-years-deceased wife Mary, in which he is beckoned to the fog-ridden town of Silent Hill at the same time as numerous other people troubled by their past.

What it’s like

Fog-smeared streets, rusted chain-link and sodium-orange lamps under a grey pall, with a camera that sits behind James's shoulder and the world dissolving into grain and static whenever the mood tips. The palette is sickly and desaturated: bruised greens, dried-blood browns, the hot sear of a flashlight beam cutting through murk. Its sound is the real unsettling force, a restrained, often ambient score of detuned drones and distant metallic scraping, broken by radio static and the creak of unseen doors. The vibe is dread-soaked melancholy, a slow, sinking unease best met late at night with the lights off and headphones on. Pacing is deliberate, with long stretches of wandering and backtracking punctuated by sudden, clumsy combat that leaves you feeling exposed. Emotionally it is grief and guilt turned inside out, following a man slowly forced to face what he has buried. Intensity is high: grisly violence and gore, bloody and visceral creature design, disturbing imagery of disease, death and sexual undertones, and a constant psychological threat rather than jump-scare spectacle. Not gentle in any sense. Made for players who want a bleak, atmospheric, mind-bending horror story and are willing to sit with discomfort.
