The story
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty - HD Edition feature an increased 720p resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, providing a clearer and wider view of the player's surroundings compared to the original 480p resolution and 4:3 ratio of the PlayStation 2 version. Cutscenes can now be viewed in full-screen or letterboxed format, while online achievements/trophies have been added as well. Most of the additional content from Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance has also been ported in this version, such as the Missions and Snake Tales modes, although the Skateboarding mini-game that was present in the PlayStation 2 version of Substance is absent.
What it’s like
Rain-slicked grey steel and washed-out blue dusk give this stealth game a cold, industrial look. Fog, catwalks and searchlight sweeps are rendered in sharp 720p widescreen, so corridors feel wider and more exposed. The soundscape is mostly rain, distant alarms and boots on metal, with a restrained synth-and-strings score that swells at key moments and otherwise drops out, leaving long stretches of near silence. Lengthy cutscenes and talkative radio calls interrupt the crawl through rooms, so the pacing alternates between tense, patient sneaking and slow, philosophical stillness. The vibe is brooding, cerebral and uneasy, closer to a cold-weather thriller than a blockbuster rush. Violence is frequent but stylised: gunfights, stun and knife takedowns, and occasional brief gore, with some intense, unsettling sequences. Its mature themes of identity, control and information carry much of the weight. It suits a long, quiet evening alone or a focused session on a handheld, for players who enjoy patient tactical stealth and story-heavy atmosphere.
