The story

This version of Silent Hill 2 is a remaster included in the Silent Hill HD Collection. The graphics have been re-mastered to 720p, the in-game voice-over was updated along with a re-mastering of the soundtrack and achievements/trophies were added.

What it’s like

Fog-choked streets, rust-brown corridors and flickering fluorescent wards, rendered in the sharper 720p of this HD re-release, with the grain and murk still intact. The fixed camera angles frame each lonely figure from a distance, and the flashlight beam is the only warmth in a mostly sepia-grey world. Akira Yamaoka's score mixes sparse, mournful piano and guitar with industrial scrapes and hiss, while radio static warns of danger before anything appears. The pace is slow and deliberate, with long stretches of wandering and puzzle-solving broken by sudden, brutal encounters. Intensity is high: frequent gore, grisly violence, disturbing sexual undertones and oppressive dread, more psychological than jump-scare driven. The mood is bleak, grief-soaked and uneasy, a late-night, alone-in-the-dark experience. It suits players who want atmosphere and emotional weight over action, and who are comfortable with horror that stays with them.
