The story

The ultimate thief is back! Tread softly as you make your way through 15 new complex, non-linear levels full of loot to steal and guards to outsmart. Improved enemy AI, new gadgets and a riveting story will draw you into the world of Thief II: The Metal Age, a place of powerful new technologies, fanatical religions and corruption.

What it’s like

Dim, lamp-lit interiors cut by shafts of moonlight and the glow of gas lamps, with the murk of shadow doing most of the work. The 3D environments are rendered in angular, early-2000s polygons, and the steampunk city of rain-slick cobbles, brass machinery, and cathedral-like stone gives the place a grimy, oppressive grandeur. Sound is the real texture here: distant footsteps, the rattle of a guard's keys, dripping water, and a sparse, ambient score that swells only when someone has noticed you. Pacing is deliberate and patient, built around slow creeping, listening at doors, and long stretches of quiet before a single tense confrontation. The mood is brooding and watchful, a cool melancholy shot through with dry wit, and the mechanics reward careful, unseen progress over combat. Violence is limited to occasional swordplay and blackjacks, with deaths handled as brief, undramatic knockouts or falls, and there is some unsettling material involving ghosts and a corrupt, fanatical religious order. Best suited to players who enjoy a long, unhurried night alone in the dark, planning routes through a shadowy city and savouring the quiet satisfaction of getting away clean.
