The story

Dishonored 2 is a first-person action video game and the sequel to Dishonored. It borrows many of the gameplay elements from the first opus: players define their own play style by blending action, assassination, stealth, mobility and combat. Combining tools at their disposal, players are allowed options to eliminate enemies, whether they choose to pursue them unseen or ruthlessly attack head on. Dishonored 2 features the same campaign style as its predecessor in which the protagonist must advance through a series of missions.

What it’s like

Smoky whale-oil lamplight, rain-slicked cobbles and gaslit interiors with brass gears and clockwork machinery, all rendered in a painterly, high-contrast style where shadows pool thick and the Victorian-gothic skyline tilts toward the surreal. The soundtrack is restrained: mournful strings and low, sustained tones that swell during chases and drop away to near silence while you creep through a sleeping estate, with ambient drips, distant bells and the creak of wooden floors doing much of the work. Stealth is the rhythm here, so the pacing is deliberate and watchful, punctuated by sharp bursts of action when a plan goes wrong, and the mood is brooding, melancholic and morally uneasy. Violence is frequent and can be bloody, with executions, stabbings and corpses left in the open, and there is some sense of dread and cruelty, though the game also lets you finish missions without killing anyone. Combat intensity is moderate to high depending on your choices; sexual content is absent. It suits a late night alone with headphones, players who enjoy building a personal play style through sneaking, supernatural tools and time-bending puzzles, and anyone who likes a dark, ornate world that rewards patience and curiosity.
