The story

Divinity: Original Sin II is a single- and multiplayer top-down, party-based role-playing game with pen & paper RPG-like levels of freedom. It features turn-based combat, a strong focus on systematic gameplay and a well-grounded narrative.

What it’s like

Painterly, hand-built fantasy seen from a high top-down angle, with saturated greens of forest canopy, grey-blue stone, and warm lantern-orange interiors that glow against dark caves and rain-slicked ruins. The camera pulls back to show whole battlefields laid out like tabletop miniatures, and the isometric view gives the world a diorama quality. Ambient sound is full of birdsong, wind, dripping water and distant chant, while the score swells with strings and drums in combat and drops to soft, low pads when you wander. Combat is turn-based and deliberate, with spell effects that bloom in bright fire, ice and poison clouds across the grid, so the mood is more tactical focus than adrenaline. Vibe: thoughtful, cerebral and warmly absorbing, the sort of game that suits a slow weekend afternoon, a long evening with friends in co-op, or planning a fight over a late-night cup of tea. Pacing is unhurried, with long stretches of exploration and conversation punctuated by tense set-piece battles. Violence is frequent and stylised: swords, arrows and magic hit hard, blood splatters and enemies die on screen, but there is no gore close-up and nothing sexual. Tone stays earnest and playful, with dark humour and companions whose loyalty and grudges slowly shift. For players who want deep systems, freedom to improvise, and a fantasy world that rewards patient planning.
