The story
Metro Exodus is an epic, story-driven first person shooter from 4A Games that blends deadly combat and stealth with exploration and survival horror in one of the most immersive game worlds ever created. Explore the Russian wilderness across vast, non-linear levels and follow a thrilling story-line that spans an entire year through spring, summer and autumn to the depths of nuclear winter. Inspired by the novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky, Metro Exodus continues Artyom’s story in the greatest Metro adventure yet.
What it’s like
Grimy, low-lit tunnels giving way to sun-bleached wilderness: Metro Exodus shifts from claustrophobic subway dark to wide, weathered Russian landscapes, with rusted train carriages, overgrown ruins, and dusty steppe under smeared amber skies. Lighting leans on flickering lamps, tinted gas-mask vision, and thick haze, while the sound design is layered with distant wolf howls, wind over open plains, creaking metal, and a moody, synth-tinged score that swells during firefights and recedes into eerie quiet. The vibe is bleak but strangely contemplative, a melancholy road-trip through a ruined continent, best suited to late-night sessions alone with headphones. Pacing alternates between tense, claustrophobic combat and long stretches of exploration and scavenging, and the emotional arc follows a weary survivor searching for a place to belong. Intensity is high: frequent, graphic gunfights, gore, and creature horror, with dread that builds steadily rather than relying on jump scares. It suits players who want atmospheric survival, stealth-tinged tension, and a bleak, lonely world with room to wander.
