The story
Set in the 1970s, an undercover Indian spy takes on a deadly mission to expose a covert nuclear weapons program in the heart of Pakistan.
What it’s like
Warm, sun-washed period colour gives way to dim safehouses lit by a single bulb, with a 1970s palette of ochre, mustard and faded saffron in the daytime scenes and sodium-orange streetlight at night. The camera moves with the action: handheld chases through crowded bazaars, quick cuts during fight sequences, and tighter, steadier framing when the spy is alone with a forged document or a tense glance across a dinner table. The sound is loud and rousing, with brass-heavy orchestral swells, percussive drums in the set pieces, and nostalgic period songs that break the tension. Pacing is brisk and escalating, built on clandestine meetings, betrayals and close calls rather than slow reflection. Emotional register runs from patriotic fervour to flickers of romance and grief, and the lead's arc follows a loyal operative who grows more isolated as the danger closes in. Violence is frequent and stylised, with gunfights and hand-to-hand fights that are action-movie rather than gory; there is some peril and threat, and romance is kept chaste. It suits a Friday night with friends, a fast-paced escapist watch, or fans of Bollywood spy thrillers who want big set pieces and a dash of patriotic sentiment.
