The story

An inconspicuous middle school psychic confronts an organization plotting to use other psychics to rule the world. Based on the hit manga.

What it’s like

Bright, kinetic animation with flat pastel backdrops that snap into jagged, sound-heavy spectacle, then drop back into quiet suburban streets, school corridors and bare apartment rooms. The look borrows from Japanese comic-book energy: thick ink linework, exaggerated facial expressions, sudden stills and speed lines during fights, and cheerful washed-out color that makes the rare dark moments hit harder. The score mixes bouncy synth and jazzy comedic cues with heavy percussion and distorted tones when psychic power surges, so the sound itself shifts between goofy and ominous. Pacing is uneven by design, with long stretches of deadpan school-life comedy broken by short, loud bursts of action. The tone is warm, absurd and quietly tender, a mix of playful slice-of-life and earnest coming-of-age, with the emotional center resting on a withdrawn boy learning to read and trust the people around him, and on a fraught older-sibling bond. Violence is frequent and stylized: fights involve punches, blasts and bloodied faces, with some gore and brief disturbing imagery, but it is cartoonish rather than lingering. Best for comedy fans and anime viewers who want big set pieces balanced by gentle, awkward humor, and for anyone who likes stories about feelings hidden behind a deadpan face.
