The story

Ouendan returns with nineteen more J-Pop/Rock songs, along with nineteen more situations where only a cheer squad can save the day. The original Ouendan and joined by a new team, the Morning City Ouendan, who wear blue in contrast to the black of the Evening City Ouendan. Gameplay is largely identical to the original, tapping, sliding and spinning to match the beat of the song playing, in order to progress through different stages of a song. The closer the player gets to matching the song, the more points will be earned and the better the rank achieved. The whole game is played using the stylus. Improvements made in 2006's Elite Beat Agents (the non Japanese "remake" of Ouendan) have been carried over, such as the ability to completely skip introductions and unlockable songs. One replay can be saved on each song, improving the system from Elite Beat Agents.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated, and cheerfully over-the-top: the Ouendan cheer squads stomp, pose and shout against stage-style backdrops of stylised cityscapes, with the Morning City team in crisp blue and the Evening City team in black, all rendered in flat, punchy anime-style art that fills the small DS screens. The soundtrack is nineteen J-pop and rock tracks, so the sound is loud, bouncy and fast, with every tap and slide landing on the beat in a satisfying click. The feel is gleeful and playful, a lively hit of energy that rewards quick hands and a good sense of rhythm, with the whole thing played by stylus on a touch screen. Its situations are light and absurd rather than tense, so it suits a short burst after school, a bus ride, or an evening when you want to laugh and tap along. Violence and sexual content are absent; the only real pressure is the music running a little too fast. Made for people who love Japanese pop, rhythm games, and goofy, earnest comedy that asks you to cheer your heart out.
