The story
After the vicious slaughter of his family by stone-cold mercenary Sub-Zero, Hanzo Hasashi is exiled to the torturous Netherrealm. There, in exchange for his servitude to the sinister Quan Chi, he’s given a chance to avenge his family – and is resurrected as Scorpion, a lost soul bent on revenge. Back on Earthrealm, Lord Raiden gathers a team of elite warriors – Shaolin monk Liu Kang, Special Forces officer Sonya Blade, and action star Johnny Cage – an unlikely band of heroes with one chance to save humanity. To do this, they must defeat Shang Tsung's horde of Outworld gladiators and reign over the Mortal Kombat tournament.
What it’s like
Hard-edged 2D-leaning CGI animation with flat, saturated color: infernal reds and sulfur oranges against the bruised purples of the Netherrealm, cold steel blues in the Earthrealm temples, and glowing blue-white lightning that flares across dark stone. Fight scenes are the centerpiece, filmed with fast cuts, big impact frames and a constant rhythm of strikes and special moves, while quieter moments sit in shadowy interiors lit by torches and candles. The score is driven by percussive electronic and metal-tinged beats that lean into the game's arcade energy. Vibe: brutal, pulpy and kinetic, with a grim undertone. Violence is frequent and graphic, with bloody dismemberment, spurting gore, skull-crushing impacts and fatalities, plus some fantasy horror and dark, cruel imagery; sexual content is minimal. The emotional register is revenge-driven and stoic, following a vengeful ghost-warrior's grief and a band of reluctant heroes who must learn to fight as a team. It suits a late-night watch alone or a fan rewatch. Made for adult viewers who want unapologetic bloodshed, fantasy spectacle and kinetic martial-arts animation, and fans of the Mortal Kombat games.
