The story

Ni no Kuni is a series of role-playing games developed by Level-5. The series chiefly follows the young Oliver, and his journey to another world to save his mother and stop the beckoning evil. The games utilize several magic elements, allowing players to use magical abilities during gameplay, as well as creatures known as imajinn/familiars, which can be tamed for suitability during battle.

What it’s like

Storybook watercolour backdrops and soft, bright colour make the wide overworld feel like a picture book you can wander through, with small towns, sun-dappled forests and rolling fields that reward slow exploration. The score is light and melodic, built on warm strings and gentle woodwinds that lift during battles and settle back into a cosy hum between them. Encounters are visible on the map, so you can dodge or seek out a fight, and the turn-based combat is unhurried, with creature collecting and evolution giving each session a steady sense of small rewards. Its emotional register is wistful but kind: a young boy's quest carries real worry about a parent, yet the tone stays warm and hopeful. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, with no gore, sexual content or cruelty, and the peril is mild fantasy danger. It suits a rainy weekend, a relaxed evening on the sofa, or a first RPG for younger players and anyone who wants a gentle, charming adventure with no pressure.
