The story
Monster hunters Fred and Deloris Allen tangle with evil ... and family drama with their teenage twins. From the comics by Steve Niles and Damien Worm.
What it’s like
Small-town horror with a grounded, domestic core: a monster-hunting couple's household is pulled between the job and the strain of raising teenage twins, so the rhythm alternates between tense night-time hunts and quieter kitchen-table scenes where the family's frictions play out. The mood is uneasy and wry rather than lush, with ordinary neighbourhood settings often giving way to sudden, bloody encounters. Expect gore that lands hard when it arrives, along with an undercurrent of past atrocity that surfaces as the monsters' origins come into view. Violence is frequent and graphic, and there is some sexual content and cruelty, so this is not a gentle watch. The emotional register swings between dread and tenderness, with the most affecting threads concerning how a parent and her children learn to trust one another while the danger outside keeps escalating. It suits viewers who want a horror series with real family stakes, who enjoy monster-of-the-week energy layered with serialised dread, and who don't mind their genre television bloody and morally knotted.
