The story

When news of John Smith's death reaches America, Pocahontas is devastated. She sets off to London with John Rolfe, to meet with the King of England on a diplomatic mission: to create peace and respect between the two great lands. However, Governor Ratcliffe is still around; he wants to return to Jamestown and take over. He will stop at nothing to discredit the young princess.

What it’s like

Warm, hand-painted animation in soft earth tones: the Virginia forests glow in golden-green daylight, and the London scenes shift to grey fog, smoky candlelit interiors and cool blue dusk, so the film's visual mood moves from open sunlight to cramped, shadowed unease. Its camera stays fairly conventional for a children's cartoon, with wide establishing shots of rivers and sky, gentle tracking moves and expressive close-ups, and its sound is a lush orchestral score with folk-inflected melodies and a few soft ballads that give it a wistful, sentimental pull. The vibe is gentle melancholy softened by hope, best for a rainy Sunday, a comfort rewatch, or an afternoon with children. Pacing is steady and rarely rushed, with the emotional core resting on grief, loyalty and a young woman learning to stand up in an unfamiliar, hostile court. Intensity is low: there is a tense villain who schemes and some peril and threatening moments, but no gore and little real violence, and the mood stays reassuring. It suits families and viewers who want an animated film with a thoughtful, historically flavoured story and romantic warmth, without harshness.
