The story

Ratchet and Clank return as heroes for hire in Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, the second game in this action platforming franchise. There are 18 entirely new weapons, as well as five weapons from the first game (you can upload them if using your old memory save). Each weapon is upgradeable, utilizing a new experience system, where weapons transform into more powerful forms the more they are used. In addition to main story levels, new Maxi-games give players a chance to test their skills and gain experience.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated cartoon palettes in alien jungles, glossy metal cityscapes and sunlit desert plateaus, with chunky cel-shaded-leaning character models that bounce and squash with every jump. The soundtrack is a cheerful orchestral-synth mix that loops in the background while explosions, pops and laser whines fill the air, and the weapons have a satisfying tactile heft: each gun grows visibly flashier as you level it up, sprouting new forms and glows. Pacing is brisk and energetic, with platforming runs, bursts of combat and quick side challenges that break up the action. The vibe is breezy, playful and upbeat, a lighthearted sci-fi romp with plenty of goofy humour and a warm buddy-duo rapport between a lanky mechanic and his robot sidekick. Violence is cartoonish and constant, with robots and creatures blown apart in colourful bursts, but there is no gore, blood or sexual content, and nothing frightening. It suits a lazy weekend afternoon, a comfort replay, or anyone who wants a gentle-but-busy adventure with a strong sense of fun, especially players who enjoy tinkering with weapon upgrades.
