The story
Set in modern day rural America and taking place after the dramatic events of Resident Evil 6, players experience the terror directly from the first person perspective. Resident Evil 7 embodies the series' signature gameplay elements of exploration and tense atmosphere that first coined "survival horror" some twenty years ago; meanwhile, a complete refresh of gameplay systems simultaneously propels the survival horror experience to the next level. The Gold Edition contains the full game plus DLC: the Banned Footage Vol. 1 and 2, and the End of Zoe epilogue episode.
What it’s like
Grimy, lived-in decay under sickly yellow lamplight: a sprawling Louisiana bayou plantation house of peeling wallpaper, rusted tools and water-stained floorboards, rendered in gloomy first-person close quarters where every doorway feels like a held breath. Sound does most of the work here, with creaks, distant drips and a muffled heartbeat of dread, and the silences between scares are often longer than the scares themselves. The pace is deliberate and tense, built on slow exploration, scrounging for ammunition and making hard choices about what to carry, then breaking into sudden, ugly chaos. Violence is frequent and graphic, with close-up gore, grotesque creatures and some disturbing body horror, and the fear lands hard and immediate rather than being cartoonish. Its emotional register is bleak and claustrophobic, following one ordinary man drawn into a family's nightmare and fighting to stay alive. It suits a late night with the lights off, or a horror-hungry player who wants a tight, unrelenting survival experience rather than anything gentle.
