The story

Riichi City is a free-to-play client for Riichi Mahjong, a Mahjong variation commonly played in Japan. It supports four and three player matches with a ranked modes and casual modes available. Additionally, there are ingame-resources to learn how to play Riichi Mahjong.

What it’s like

Crisp anime-styled tiles clicking across a green felt table, with bright, clean interface art and a cheerful lobby of stylised player avatars that gives the whole thing a tidy, slightly glossy digital feel. The soundtrack stays light and unobtrusive, mostly bouncy background pop and the satisfying clack of tiles, so it sits comfortably in the background while you think. Pacing follows the rhythm of a hand of mahjong: quick turns, a short beat of tension while you weigh a discard, then a rush of scoring and a fresh deal. The mood is warm and low-stakes, a friendly sort of focus, with ranked ladders adding a little competitive edge that never turns harsh. Violence and sexual content are absent; the only real jolts come from a tense riichi call or a lost hand. It suits a short break on a phone, a quiet evening session, or an hour of practice learning the rules, and it is for people who enjoy tactical tile games, want a clean and cheerful look, and like to sharpen their skill at their own pace.
