The story
Rocko is a wallaby who has emigrated to America from Australia. He lives in O-Town and tries to get through life but, of course, comes across a multitude of dilemmas and misadventures he must get through. Other characters include Rocko's best friend, Heffer, a steer who has been raised by wolves, Filbert, a paranoid hypochondriac turtle, Rocko's faithful (but none-too-bright) dog Spunky, and Ed Bighead who detests Rocko and hates having him for a next door neighbor. On this show, Rocko has such adventures as trying to adapt to a new vacuum cleaner, having Heffer move in temporarily after his parents kick him out, and going to a movie theater.
What it’s like
Bright, flat Nickelodeon cartoon colour: saturated oranges, teals and pinks on hand-inked backgrounds, with a slightly wobbly, sketchbook looseness to the lines. Its suburb, O-Town, is a sunny, overdesigned place of rounded houses, bright storefronts and mild sitcom clutter, and the camera stays in simple, cheerful two-shots and gag-friendly close-ups rather than anything moody. The sound is a loose mix of jaunty, bouncy incidental music, quick slide-whistle stingers and the cast's exaggerated voices, so it feels loud but never harsh. The vibe is goofy, warm and slightly anxious, a mildly absurd sitcom that suits a lazy weekend morning, a comfort rewatch or a half-attentive evening with a snack. Pacing is quick, with short sketch-like episodes built around small everyday mishaps, and the tone stays sweet-natured even when it pokes at corporate life and bureaucracy. Its characters are endearingly ill-suited to their lives, with Rocko slowly learning to cope with a world that keeps tripping him up. Intensity is very low: slapstick bonks, pratfalls and cartoonish fright, with no real violence, gore or sexual content. It is for people who want gentle, silly, lightly satirical animation that's easy to dip into.
