The story

In 35,000 BC, the tribe of the Dirty Hairs is at war against the tribe of the Clean Hairs for eight hundred years, trying to get their shampoo. The chief of the Dirty Hairs sends his daughter Guy disguised to the enemy tribe to get some shampoo for his tribe. When the healer of the Clean Hairs tribe surprisingly kills two cavemen of his tribe, their imbecile chief assigns Pierre with curled hair and Pierre blonde to investigate the murder and find the criminal.

What it’s like

Bright, flat, deliberately cartoonish daylight washes over a prehistoric France that looks like it was built from cardboard, painted rock and shaggy costume fur, with sets that wear their artificiality openly. The framing is loose and playful, with broad gags staged in wide shots and quick cuts that let the absurd props and costumes do the work. Sound leans on comic stings, slapstick bonks and a cheerful, bouncy score that undercuts every hint of menace. The vibe is goofy, sun-faded and irreverent, the kind of easy silliness that suits a lazy afternoon, a sleepover, or a group watch where nobody needs to follow the plot closely. Its pacing is brisk and sketch-like, with one gag tumbling into the next, and its emotional register stays light, built on friendly rivalry and a bumbling detective and his wary partner slowly getting along. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, all pratfalls and exaggerated clubbings, with no real cruelty or gore, and the tone is gentle throughout. It is for people who want a silly, undemanding French comedy that parodies crime-story conventions with a wink and a grin.
