The story

Long-suffering heiress Seeta is treated worse than a servant by her abusive money-grubbing aunt. Meanwhile, her long-lost twin sister Geeta grows up to be a gutsy street performer. One day, the girls unintentionally swap places.

What it’s like

Bright, saturated studio colour with sunlit interiors, gaudy costumes and wide, theatrical frames that let the comedy play out in full view. Musical numbers arrive at a lively clip, built on brass, dhol beats and bouncy melodies, and the mood is cheerful, broad and warm. This is a sit-back, laugh-out-loud comedy, good for a lazy weekend afternoon, a comfort rewatch, or a group watch where everyone can join in on the songs. The pacing is brisk and episodic, with slapstick mix-ups, exaggerated double-takes and sudden bursts of romance, and the emotional register stays light even when the heroine is treated badly. The aunt's cruelty is played for laughs rather than menace, and the twin-swap farce is the engine of the fun. Violence is minimal and cartoonish: a few fistfights and comic tussles, no gore, no sexual content, nothing frightening. It suits viewers who want escapism, big personalities, music and a happy ending, especially fans of classic Hindi masala cinema and anyone who wants something gentle and playful.
