The story
200X. Everyday life suddenly came to an end. Tokyo is transformed into a world of demons following an anomaly known as the "Conception". This is the story of our protagonist's journey through a changed Tokyo in his new body, and of he and his friends' trials and tribulations as they seek to recreate the world. This Asian console and international PC version of the remaster cuts out the content from the expanded versions of the original game, making them available as optional DLC in select regions.
What it’s like
Bleak, dusk-lit Tokyo rendered in a grim, inky palette: rain-slick asphalt, empty train platforms, and ruined skyscrapers under a perpetually overcast or blood-tinged sky, with the sprawl of the city pressing in from every side. Its sound is a moody mix of ambient synth and somber piano under the city's hum, with combat stingers that snap in sharply during encounters. Exploration is first-person dungeon-crawling through corridors and subway tunnels, where the pace is measured and deliberate, punctuated by tense, turn-based battles that reward patience and planning. The tone is post-apocalyptic and melancholic, with a serious, low-warmth register: the people you meet are wary survivors, and their arcs follow a protagonist and companions who slowly find meaning and hope amid collapse. Violence is frequent and stylised rather than gory, with demons dissolving into light after defeat, though the world carries constant dread and some grim, unsettling imagery. It suits a late-night session alone, a long stretch of focused play, or anyone wanting a dark, contemplative world with hard-edged strategy and little cosiness, for players who enjoy atmospheric RPGs and bleak, morally tangled settings.
