The story

Dark Souls III is an action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Released in March 2016, it is the fourth entry in the Souls series and the final instalment in the Dark Souls trilogy. Set in the decaying kingdom of Lothric, players take on the role of the "Ashen One," an undead warrior tasked with rekindling the First Flame to prevent the world from falling into darkness. The game features challenging combat, intricate level design, and a deep, lore-rich narrative.

What it’s like

Ash-grey and ember-orange, with the gothic cathedral stone of Lothric wearing away under a sickly sky: the look of Dark Souls III is decayed grandeur, all crumbling spires, cold mist over drowned courtyards, and bonfires glowing like the only warm things left in the world. Its soundscape is sparse and mournful, with long stretches of wind and distant bells broken by the clang of steel and the heavy, deliberate thud of armoured footfalls, and boss themes that swell into choral dread. Third-person camera work keeps you close to the action, and the rhythm is one of cautious advance, sudden death, and hard-won relief at a bonfire. The vibe is melancholic and austere, a slow-burning dread that rewards patience rather than reflexes alone, suited to a late-night session alone with headphones on. Intensity is high: frequent, stylised violence with blood spray and sudden, punishing death, though no gore for its own sake and no sexual content. It is built for players who want demanding, methodical combat, layered environmental storytelling, and a world that unfolds through exploration and quiet lore rather than exposition.
