The story

The Shadow of the Erdtree is a fully-fledged expansion that features an all-new story set in the Land of Shadow. It adds a whole new map with 70 new weapons, ten new shields, 39 new Talismans, 14 new sorceries, 28 new incantations, 20 new Spirit Ashes, 25 New Ashes of War, 30 new armour sets, and new consumables and craftables.

What it’s like

Ashen-grey and bruised-violet palettes give way to luminous gold and bleached bone in the Land of Shadow, where wide, vertiginous vistas of gnarled roots, drifting spores and eerie, glowing flora unfold under a sky that seems always on the edge of dusk. The art direction leans into awe: enormous ruined architecture framed against empty horizons, long pauses in which the camera simply lets a place breathe. Sound is sparse and mournful, with distant choral drones, wind through hollow stone and the sudden crack of a boss's blow swallowing the quiet. Its vibe is brooding wonder, a grand, melancholy dread that rewards patience. Pacing alternates between slow, careful exploration and tense, punishing duels that demand full attention, so it suits a long solo evening with the lights low or a focused weekend session. Violence is stylised and frequent, with bloody hits and fallen foes, but there is no gore spectacle or sexual content, and the fear comes from difficulty and atmosphere more than shock. It is for players who love intricate world-building, deliberate combat mastery and the quiet thrill of discovering a hidden corner of a vast, unforgiving realm.
