The story

Entirely rebuilt from the ground up and masterfully enhanced, Demon's Souls is a remake of the 2009 release that introduces the horrors of a fog-laden, dark fantasy land to a whole new generation of gamers. Those who’ve faced its trials and tribulations before, can once again challenge the darkness in stunning visual quality with incredible performance. The remake features improved graphics and animations, sound and lighting tweaks and a reimagining of many of the visual, musical and mechanical aspects of the original game.

What it’s like

Murky fog drifting over ruined stone, lantern-lit corridors and gothic cathedrals bathed in cold blue and sickly amber, with the grime and sheen of every surface picked out in sharp, modern detail. The soundtrack is sparse and funereal, with long stretches of wind, distant bells and the clank of armour broken by sudden, brutal stings, and the fog-laden world reads as sun-starved and oppressive. Its vibe is bleak, austere and quietly grim, best suited to a late evening alone with the lights low, or a dedicated session when you have the patience to sit with defeat. Movement is deliberate and weighty: every swing, parry and dodge carries commitment, and deaths send you back to a hub with a hard-earned sense of loss rather than a quick reset. Violence is frequent and visceral, with bloody impacts and grotesque creatures, though gore is stylised rather than gratuitous, and the fear comes from pressure and ambush more than jump scares. Frustration is part of the design, softened only by the sporadic help of other players' messages and phantoms. It is for players who want a punishing, atmospheric challenge, who enjoy slow mastery and a world that gives nothing away.
