The story
Black Souls is the censored release of a dark fantasy, souls-like RPG game inspired by Dark Souls and various fairy tales, where you are an unnamed undead who has awakened imprisoned within the Lost Empire. Freed by the brave Holy Knight Jeanne D'Arc, your freedom is short-lived as a fearsome dragon claims both your lives. Now you have one goal - to infiltrate the Lost Empire and defeat Cinderella, who spreads the fog that drains souls and drives everyone to insanity, but to get there, you will need to defeat or enter into a covenant with the Demonic Princesses.
What it’s like
Murky, gothic fantasy where fog drifts through decayed ruins and fairy-tale imagery curdles into something sinister: lantern-dim corridors, grim stone, and pale creeping mist as the central menace. The mood is oppressive and deliberate, built around punishing, patient combat in which each death and each rest at a checkpoint feels weighty. Its vibe is bleak, eerie, and darkly whimsical, suited to a late night alone with headphones or to players who want a Souls-style grind with a twisted storybook flavour. Pacing is slow and exploratory, with progress coming from learning enemy patterns and uncovering the strange rules of the world. The arc follows an undead protagonist pulled into a cursed empire and drawn into uneasy bargains with its rulers. Intensity is high in the fear and combat register: frequent violence against grotesque enemies, unsettling imagery, and a hopeless tone. The censored release removes the explicit sexual content the wider series is known for, but it is not gentle and offers no comfort. It is for fans of demanding, atmospheric action RPGs who enjoy dark fairy-tale horror and don't mind dying often.
