The story

Shin Megami Tensei V, the fifth numbered game of the Shin Megami Tensei series, is a role-playing video game set in modern-day Tokyo. It will feature returning gameplay elements from previous games, such as the ability to fuse demons, along with new mechanics.

What it’s like

Washed-out grey Tokyo under a permanently bruised sky, with the city rendered as a hushed, emptied ruin: long streets of cracked asphalt, abandoned storefronts, and deep shadow pooling in subway tunnels and alleys, all lit by a sickly dusk that never quite becomes night. Demons are drawn with bold, saturated colour and heavy ink outlines, so they stand out sharply against the drab environments, and the city's fallen buildings give way to vast, eerie vistas of the Vortex World's crimson skies. The soundtrack leans on pulsing synth and driving rock during battle, then drops into long, spare ambient stretches while exploring, with a deliberate quiet that makes every encounter land. Turn-based fights move at a measured, deliberate pace punctuated by theatrical flourishes, and the rhythm of dungeon crawls and demon-fusion menus rewards patient, methodical play. Its mood is bleak but purposeful, a cold, dusky melancholy with flashes of defiant energy. Violence is frequent and stylised, with blood-spatter and grisly demon designs but no gratuitous gore. It suits long late-night sessions and players who want a grim, thoughtful apocalypse built around strategy, for those who enjoy collecting, combining and carefully planning their approach.
