The story

The story of apprentice detective and Devil Summoner extraordinaire Raidou Kuzunoha XIV returns in this remastered classic! Call upon your demons to solve supernatural mysteries and dispose of enemies.

What it’s like

Dim Taishō-era Tokyo rendered in moody, painterly anime art, with lantern-lit back alleys, rain-slick cobblestones and smoky gaslit interiors in deep indigo, ochre and blood red. Demons arrive as bright, uncanny shapes against the gloom, and the soundtrack leans on jazz-inflected strings and a restrained, brooding sax-and-piano score that drops away to ticking clocks and wind during investigations. Much of the play is slow and deliberate: wandering streets, questioning townsfolk, piecing together clues, then a turn-based battle system where you summon and negotiate with demons, and fights land with crisp hits rather than gore. Violence is frequent but cartoonishly stylized, with little blood; the horror comes from atmosphere and eerie, grotesque apparitions rather than shock. The mood is melancholy and wry, with a dry, sardonic humour threaded through the investigations and a cat companion who keeps things light. It suits a rainy evening, a quiet solo session, or fans of atmospheric mystery who enjoy a noir-tinged historical setting with a little demon-hunting bite.
