The story

Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows is a free expansion for Shovel Knight that follows Plague Knight in his own quest. He uses alchemy to search for ingredients needed to create Serum Supernus, but the items must be extracted from the villainous knights of the Order of No Quarter. The expansion reintroduces the series’ platforming, music, and storytelling while adding a new play style, new bosses, and additional story content.

What it’s like

Chunky 8-bit pixel art in a bright, saturated palette, with bubbling green and purple alchemical glows lighting the dim laboratories and gothic towers that Plague Knight haunts. The sprites are expressive and bold, and the animation has a snappy, hand-drawn bounce. The chiptune score leans toward jaunty, bass-driven loops that swell into brassy fanfares, with bubbling potion sound effects and crisp jumps underneath. Playing it feels quick and springy: Plague Knight's bomb-hopping, jumping, and lobbing of alchemical bombs make each room a small puzzle of momentum and timing. The vibe is cheerful and mischievous, a playful retro romp with a dark, theatrical edge. It suits an evening of short sessions, a comfort replay, or a lighthearted stretch on a handheld. Violence is cartoonish and bloodless, with defeated foes poofing away, and the tone stays light throughout. It is for people who enjoy tight, skill-driven platforming, retro pixel art, and a villain-with-a-heart story told with warmth and humor.
