The story

Silent Hill 3 is the third installment in the Silent Hill series. Like the previous entries, Silent Hill 3 is a survival horror combining action-based combat and puzzle-solving, but is somewhat more combat-oriented than the preceding installments. The main character is able to side-step and block some attacks, but in general shares with the other protagonists of the series their relative ineptitude in combat.

What it’s like

Rain-slicked grey streets and fog that swallows the edges of the frame, with the flat, grainy murk of PS2-era 3D giving everything a sickly, low-resolution dread. The town's otherworldly areas bleed in rust, meat-pink flesh walls, and blood-dark corridors lit by a single flickering lamp or the cold blue of a flashlight beam. Sound does much of the work: a radio's hiss and static warn of approaching monsters, while the score is industrial clangs, distant screams and long stretches of near-silence broken by footsteps on metal grating. Combat is clumsy and deliberately uncomfortable, so every encounter feels like a scramble to survive rather than a power fantasy, and blood spatters across the screen in bursts. The vibe is bleak, claustrophobic and unsettling, a late-night, lights-off experience best played alone in one long sitting. The pacing is slow and methodical, with backtracking, puzzles and conversations that reward patience. Its heroine's arc turns on guilt, memory and the confrontation with a violent past, and the horror is intense and frequently gory, with brutal violence, grotesque creatures and disturbing imagery. It suits players who want atmospheric, psychological survival horror with a strong mystery and don't mind a punishing, uneasy tone.
