The story
The PlayStation 2 party classic comes to the PS3 in an updated and network rich upgrade. Anyone that is remotely interested in SingStar knows how the title operates - it turns your console into a modern day karaoke machine: Displaying the videos and music of some classic pop songs (it comes with around 30 initially), and presenting the words with which you and a few friends (or alone if that floats your boat) can accompany on the provided microphones.
What it’s like
Bright, flat party-room colour: the menus and song screens glow in saturated pinks, blues and lime, with the lyric bar sweeping across the bottom of the frame like a ticker and the music videos playing in a small, sharp box. The look is deliberately low-polish and glossy, with the polygonal 3D avatars and the real-photo box art of the era giving it a snapshot-from-a-friend's-living-room feel. Sound is the whole point: studio pop and rock recordings played loud through the TV, with the on-screen pitch ribbon and the crowd-noise cheers and boos of the scoring doing most of the emotional work. It is a loud, giddy, gently competitive vibe, best for a lit room with people gathered around the sofa, a birthday or a rainy evening when you want to shout out a chorus rather than sit quietly. Tempo is set by whichever track you pick, moving from one song to the next in a lively rhythm. The emotional register is goofy, warm and self-conscious, with the sense that everyone is being a little silly together. Violence and sexual content are absent; the only real pressure is the mild embarrassment of a bad note. Designed for groups who want an easy, sociable night of singing badly and laughing about it, and for solo players who enjoy belting out songs at home.
