The story

César, an unhappy concierge, maintains a peculiar relationship with the very diverse inhabitants of the upper-class apartment building where he works in Barcelona.

What it’s like

Cold, controlled interiors in Barcelona: a tightly framed apartment block where the lighting is mostly flat, sickly fluorescent in the stairwells and dim amber in the lived-in flats, with the camera drifting slowly through corridors and keyholes. The palette is muted greens, browns and grey-blue, and the sound is restrained, with a sparse, tense score that surfaces only at pressure points and long stretches of building hum, footsteps and ticking clocks. Its vibe is quietly sinister and claustrophobic, the kind of unease that builds while you sit alone at night with the lights low. The pacing is patient and methodical, with the dread accumulating through small, deliberate observations rather than sudden shocks. Its central figure is a lonely, resentful man who grows more intrusive and controlling as he insinuates himself into the lives of his neighbours. Intensity is moderate: some brief, sharp violence and a few disturbing moments of cruelty and manipulation, with suspense and psychological menace doing most of the work rather than gore. It suits viewers who want slow-burn thrillers with a creeping, unsettling atmosphere and a cold, observational style.
