The story

Construction company owner John Matthews learns that his estranged son, Jason, has been arrested for drug trafficking. Facing an unjust prison sentence for a first time offender courtesy of mandatory minimum sentence laws, Jason has nothing to offer for leniency in good conscience. Desperately, John convinces the DEA and the opportunistic DA Joanne Keeghan to let him go undercover to help make arrests big enough to free his son in return. With the unwitting help of an ex-con employee, John enters the narcotics underworld where every move could be his last in an operation that will demand all his resources, wits and courage to survive.

What it’s like

Gritty, desaturated handheld camerawork in drab suburban and industrial Texas: muted greys, sun-bleached parking lots, dim bars and cramped kitchens lit by sickly fluorescents, with the grain and jostle of a documentary that keeps close to its characters. Scenes are built on tight two-shots and long, uneasy pauses, and the score stays sparse, with low synth drones that surface only when a deal turns dangerous. The mood is tense, weary and bruised, a low-lit thriller that feels like sitting in a stale car outside a bad neighbourhood waiting for something to go wrong. Pacing is steady, with long stretches of quiet recon and sudden jolts of violence. The intensity is moderate to high: a few sharp, brief bouts of physical violence and gunfire, some drug-related menace, and an undercurrent of threat, with no gore for its own sake. The emotional core is a hardened father and a son who has run out of second chances, slowly working toward something like trust under intense pressure. It suits viewers who want a grounded, adult thriller about family loyalty and moral compromise rather than escapism, and is best watched late at night with full attention.
