The story

Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran, brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks and his rookie partner take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.

What it’s like

Cold, grimy police-procedural palette: sickly fluorescent light in precinct corridors, rain-slick streets under sodium-orange streetlamps, and a dull steel-grey city that looks like it has been wet for weeks. The camera is restless and handheld in the detective scenes, shifting between tight close-ups of faces and cramped interiors, then cutting to hard, clinical framings of crime scenes and the grisly tableaux the killer leaves behind. The score is a pulsing, industrial mix of low drones and sharp metallic stings, with long stretches of ambient street noise and sirens. Vibe: gritty, bleak, and jumpy, the sort of mood that suits a late-night watch with the lights off. Pacing moves in lurches, tight investigative beats broken by sudden violence, and the emotional register is cynical and combative, with an uneasy father-son tension running beneath the case. Intensity is high: frequent graphic gore, brutal and lingering kills, body horror, dark crime themes including corruption and the murder of a police officer, and constant threat. This is not gentle viewing. It suits fans of grisly serial-killer thrillers and of the Saw franchise who want a dark, cynical detective story with a nasty twist.
