The story

Star Realms is a card-based deck building science-fiction tabletop game, designed by Rob Dougherty and Darwin Kastle and published in 2014 by Wise Wizard Games. The game started out as a Kickstarter campaign in 2013. The goal of Star Realms is to destroy your opponent or opponents by purchasing cards using "trade" points and using these cards to attack your opponent's "authority" using your "combat" points. The game takes place in a distant future where different races compete to gain resources, trade and outmaneuver each other in a race to become ruler of the galaxy. Star Realms is similar to other deck building games, like Ascension and Dominion.

What it’s like

Clean, flat digital card art in bold primary colours against a starfield backdrop, with the cards themselves doing most of the visual work: chunky ship silhouettes, crisp numerals for trade and combat, and a tidy grid of purchasable cards laid out like a market row. The soundscape is light and unobtrusive, with soft electronic blips and short chimes for each played card, so the room stays quiet enough for conversation. Pacing is brisk and tactical; a match of a few minutes lurches forward in small, satisfying bursts as your deck grows sharper and each turn feels like a quick sum that tips toward a win. Emotionally it sits in cool, low-stakes competition, a tabletop-style puzzle that rewards planning more than nerve. Intensity is minimal: there is no gore or cruelty, only abstract conflict in which ships simply strike an opponent's authority. It suits a rainy afternoon, a coffee-break match on a phone, or a short game shared with friends. It is for people who enjoy compact strategy, slow-building engine decks and the mild thrill of outmaneuvering a rival.
