The story

Super Mario Bros. Crossover is a fan-made crossover platform Flash video game launched on Newgrounds on April 27, 2010 by Exploding Rabbit. It is based mostly on the gameplay of Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. for the NES. The only major difference is the ability to control characters that debuted in other Nintendo Entertainment System games unrelated to the Mario series. The latest version available (3.1) was released on December 25, 2013.

What it’s like

Chunky, bright pixel art in the familiar NES palette, with blue skies, green pipes and brick blocks, and characters swapped in from other Nintendo games so a sword-swinging hero or an arm-cannon bounty hunter hops across the same side-scrolling courses. The chiptune soundtrack pings and bounces in the classic 8-bit way, and the controls are snappy and forgiving, so the room around you fades while you platform. It feels like a playful browser-window side trip: unofficial, a little scrappy, and easy to pick up for a short sitting. The action is cartoonish, with enemies stomped or blasted and no gore, and the difficulty climbs gently rather than cruelly. It suits a lazy afternoon, a quick break at a desk, or a nostalgic evening for anyone who grew up with these games and likes seeing their heroes share a stage. Those who want familiar mechanics with a playful mix-and-match twist, rather than a story-heavy or punishing experience, will find it especially welcoming.
